Sunset at the Taung Kwe Pagoda – Loikaw, Myanmar

A sunset on the top of the Taung Kwe Pagoda in Loikaw, Myanmar is a must do for anyone who makes their way to this part of the country. The views are stunning and I have to say that this is one of the most picturesque places we’ve seen on our whole trip through Myanmar.

The Taung Kwe Pagoda is amazing because it is built on the top of a series of natural cliffs and columns of rock. (See the photo below in the Location section). There are many stupas at the tops of the rocks and you have to take a series of interconnected stairs to reach all of them.

This stupa after the first set of stairs was our favorite and most photographed area.

It’s only a five minute climb up the stairs, but when you reach the top, it looks like you’ve climbed a mountain. There’s just a flat valley floor below and unblocked views of the small, quaint city.

Sunset over here has so many colors for how cloudless the sky is. There are all shades of purple through orange. This might have been one of our favorite sunsets in Myanmar.

You can stay all the way till it gets dark, but make sure to save some daylight for the walk back to the hostel.

Location:

To get to the Taung Kwe Pagoda, it is an easy 20 minute walk over from the Amazing Box Hostel, which recently just opened. Or you could rent a bicycle and ride over.

We recommend staying at the Amazing Box Hostel, which was made just for tourists, but because not many people stop through this town, it was empty when we arrived. The place is as clean as can be and the staff is very friendly, even though they are not fluent in English. The best part, apart from the friendly staff, is that can see the temple from the rooftop bar. It’s quite the scenic view.
