It wasn’t your typical morning sunrise. The sun barely showed, the sky wasn’t red or orange, but it was somehow really beautiful. The rays, gracefully spaced apart, creeped slowly in the ocean. The clouds changed and moved so quickly. Colors hid into the sky that normally one didn’t see. If anything, I didn’t expect anything out of this sunrise. I thought it was going to be grey for the whole day. But it somehow surprised me. Sunrise at Lanikai PIllboxes was quite an event.
The nice part about the Pillboxes Hike is that it doesn’t take up much of your time. A small, 20 minutes of of hiking can provide one of the best sunrises you’ll see on Oahu. So even on a completely washed out day, you’ll still see a good view, with the chance that an amazing sunrise will happen.
I recommend heading here on a weekday. Saturdays and Sundays are very busy and will be difficult finding parking. However, if you are going to spend the day at Lanikai Beach afterwards, it pays to come early.
And even if sunrise wasn’t what you expected, you might be treated to an amazing double rainbow.
